A roadmap published this week outlines a plan of action to the UK achieving low-carbon ammonia as a strategic national asset. The UK Ammonia Alliance (UKAA) says this can support food security, decarbonisation and regional revitalisation.
The UKAA’s survey of the UK ammonia sector details the potential for over 1.5 billion in private investment and more than 5000 jobs, which they say would be backed by early import terminals and a pathway to at least 1.1 Mtpa of domestic ammonia production by 2036.
The roadmap aims to replace all existing ammonia demand in the UK with low carbon ammonia by 2036.
They caveat to say that given the current lack of dedicated policy and funding support for low-carbon ammonia, there is an inherent uncertainty in the trajectory presented.
However they say they hope that the roadmap can form a useful tool for industry, analysts and policymakers as they continue to enable regulation.
UKAA says that low-carbon ammonia can help decarbonise existing uses in fertilisers, chemicals and industrial processes, while also enabling new applications in maritime fuel, flexible power generation, hydrogen storage and hydrogen supply to hard-to-abate sectors.
