The Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly has said that Egypt will implement an integrated system of green and sustainable public transport. He describes it as a key pillar of urban and economic development and improving citizens’ quality of life.
Historically, Egypt has lagged behind other countries in terms of ESG – most recently falling from 20th to 28th in the 2026 Climate Change Performance Index. This new commitment from the Prime Minister looks towards a future involving sustainability in Egypt’s landscape, beyond energy usage and into public infrastructure.
Madbouly added that projects, including monorails, high-speed electric trains and metro lines, are not only designed to provide fast and safe transport but also to reshape traffic and development patterns by connecting new cities and residential and industrial areas through an advanced and integrated public transport network.
He made the remarks at the start of an extensive inspection tour, accompanied by Transport Minister Kamel El-Wazir, of a number of eco-friendly green public transport projects in Giza and Cairo that aim to better facilitate citizens’ movements.
He said the project is also expected to encourage citizens to use public transport instead of private cars, helping cut consumption of fuel and petroleum products.
