Siemens has launched a new electronic circuit protection device in the UK designed to improve fault detection, reduce equipment damage and support remote monitoring.
The company says the technology responds to electrical faults up to 1,000 times faster than conventional electromechanical protection devices.
Designed for use in low-voltage electrical circuits, the device protects systems housed within electrical distribution boards and control cabinets found in buildings, factories, hospitals and data centres.
Siemens says the semiconductor-based technology can reduce the energy released during a short circuit by 99.5%, helping to minimise overheating, equipment stress and unplanned downtime.
Unlike traditional circuit breakers, the ‘SENTRON ECPD’ combines protection, switching, measurement and communication functions in a single compact unit. The device can be configured for different applications and provides access to real-time status information, measured values and diagnostic data.
The technology also supports remote diagnostics and remote switching, which Siemens says can be particularly valuable at sites without direct on-site support.
In one deployment within the gas sector, the company said the system helped identify a generator fault caused by a blocked fuel filter before it was manually reported. The customer reported service visits had fallen by up to 30% after adopting the tech.
Siemens claims the device can reduce cabinet space requirements by up to 80%, depending on the application.
