Sunderland AFC’s (SAFC) Stadium of Light will soon be home to a brand new EV charging hub, featuring 20 ultra-rapid charging bays.

The hub will be powered by 100% renewable energy, supporting the club’s Ready Eco strategy, which aims to make SAFC energy-sufficient from renewable sources by 2028 and achieve net zero 2040.

Paul Kingsmore, Chief Operations Officer at Sunderland AFC, said:“By installing a state-of-the-art EV charging hub at the Stadium of Light, we are not only improving the experience for fans and visitors but also supporting the wider transition to cleaner, greener transport in the North East.”

The bays will be a mixture of 16 x 150kW and 4 x 300kW chargers after the charger company RAW invested around £750,000 into the city.

In line with the company’s free charging scheme, fans will be able to fill up with no fee from the 8th to the 9th of October, when Sunderland face Brighton at home.

This development sows another step towards green initiatives being taken across the sports sector.
