Iberdrola has secured European funding for eight industrial heat electrification projects that will support the deployment of more than 150 MW of renewable energy and help reduce emissions in energy-intensive sectors.
The projects were selected in the first industrial heat decarbonisation auction under the European Commission’s Innovation Fund. They will replace fossil fuel-based heat generation with renewable electricity using electric boilers.
The initiatives are expected to consume around 240 GWh of renewable electricity annually and will be rolled out across sectors including food and beverages, chemicals, manufacturing, mining and tyre production.
The programme forms part of a wider European effort to decarbonise industrial processes while improving energy efficiency and competitiveness.
Iberdrola said the projects will help participating companies reduce exposure to fossil fuel price volatility and support long-term sustainability goals.
The European auction, managed by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA), selected 65 projects across 10 countries and allocated nearly €400 million in funding. Spain received 24 of the successful awards.
Iberdrola’s projects secured almost €50 million in funding, representing around 35% of the total support awarded in Spain.
The company said the projects will be backed by long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs), providing cost certainty while mobilising more than 150 MW of renewable generation.
This is in addition to two existing PPAs in Spain covering the metallurgical and data centre sectors, which account for a further 90 MW of renewable energy.
