Chancellor John Healey has announced in today’s Autumn Budget that the government will provide £100 energy payments to 20 million households.
The payment will be received by homes that fall under council tax bands A to D in order to support people with energy bills this winter.
The money will be paid directly into the bank accounts of those who are eligible and is said to be a £2.6 billion scheme that Mr Healey claims will “take the pressure off in the coldest months”.
The Chancellor stated earlier in his speech that Labour’s biggest priority is cheaper energy and stated that clean power is the key to achieving that.
He said: “I know that with the conflict in the Middle East, rising energy bills are a real worry. I know that people look to government at times like this, not to solve all their problems but to give them a bit of breathing space.”
This announcement follows the earlier announcement that the standing charge on gas bills will be abolished.
