The capacity for offshore floating wind turbines could exceed 15 GW by 2030 and create 97,000 jobs.
A report by Heligan Group says that floating wind could deliver one-third of the UK’s offshore wind capacity by 2050 and generate 175 TWh annually.
A total of £55 million is being invested into the Port of Cromarty Firth to support floating wind manufacturing whilst more than £500 million is being invested into Port Talbot to transform it into a major hub for the Celtic Sea.
Andrew Dickinson, Head of Infrastructure Services at Heligan Group said: “Overall, floating infrastructure is a catalyst for a new wave of strategic investment and consolidation, with floating wind emerging as the most attractive investment opportunity,”
“Yet the UK is at risk of falling behind without the infrastructure to deliver at scale. No UK port is currently equipped to support commercial floating wind deployment, creating a critical bottleneck.”
UK government auctions in 2025, have awarded up to 4.5 GW of capacity and up to 11 ports could be transformed, with £3.5 billion of investment needed by 2030.
