The grid connection and commissioning of a 1,243MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) has been completed.

The project in the West Midlands is expected to be Europe’s largest BESS by storage capacity.

Located near National Grid’s Hams Hall substation, the 350 MW/1,243 MWh facility is expected to play an important role in balancing electricity supply and demand and support the integration of renewable energy into the UK’s electricity system.

The completion of the first phase took just 20 days which PV inverter and energy storage system provider Sungrow says is thanks to direct access to technical expertise, preparation and close customer-HQ coordination.

At full capacity, BW ESS estimates it will be capable of supporting the electricity needs of approximately 1.3 million homes for up to 3.5 hours.

As more renewable energy comes onto the electricity grid, large-scale storage projects are becoming essential to managing fluctuations in generation and demand, helping maintain a reliable and resilient electricity system.
