Elexon will launch its smart data repository this autumn after a UK Government decision confirmed its role in delivering the digital infrastructure needed for a smarter and more flexible electricity system.
The decision follows a joint scoping exercise by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) and Ofgem into wider access to smart metering data. The review concluded that Elexon’s repository offers the fastest and most cost-effective route to making electricity smart meter data available while supporting consumer benefits, innovation and decarbonisation.
The repository will provide open access to half-hourly electricity consumption data, allowing businesses and innovators to develop new products and services that help consumers engage with a more flexible energy system.
It will form part of a wider programme of digital platforms being developed alongside the National Energy System Operator (NESO) and the Retail Energy Code Company (RECCo). Together, these systems will provide the digital backbone for a modern electricity market.
Initially, the platform will provide aggregated household and business consumption data from autumn 2026.
Individual consumer-level data will become available after integration with RECCo’s Consumer Consent Solution, expected in spring 2027, enabling consumers to control how their energy data is shared.
The repository will also support improved network planning, reduce constraint costs and help unlock greater value from commercial and industrial energy users.
Elexon said the platform will include strong security measures and comply fully with General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) requirements.
Peter Stanley, Chief Executive of Elexon, said: “Making half-hourly electricity consumption data widely available is essential to enabling businesses to develop new products and services, drive innovation and help consumers interact more effectively with a decarbonised energy system.”
He added: “We recognise the importance of strong governance, security and privacy protections, and we will continue to work collaboratively with stakeholders as we develop our repository.”
