Denza has opened UK orders for the Bao 5 – the brand’s first SUV to be made available here.

The announcement follows on from sale details of the Z9 GT, the BYD group premium brand’s first UK model, being announced last week.

The Bao 5 is being made available with a choice of Elegance and Ultimate trim levels. Standard features with Elegance trim include 18-inch alloy wheels, a 15.6-inch touchscreen with built-in Google functions, a panoramic sunroof, front seats with heating, ventilation and massage functions, a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, wireless smartphone charging and an in-car food cooler.

Further features with Ultimate spec include 20-inch alloys, electrically deploying side steps, ventilated rear seats, a second wireless smartphone charger, and an air suspension system with ride height adjustment function.

Plug-in hybrid power only

The Bao 5 is being offered with a single plug-in hybrid powertrain option, featuring two electric motors, one at the front axle with 272PS, and one at the rear with 388PS, for a total system output of 544PS. A 1.5-litre petrol engine acts mainly as a generator for the 31.8kWh battery but can also drive the wheels directly under high-load conditions.

The battery is compatible with 100kW DC charging, allowing a 30-80% charge in 18 minutes.

The powertrain includes elements designed to assist with off-road driving such as electronic differential locks front and rear, an energy centre lock said to distribute torque between axles 30 times faster than a traditional mechanical setup, and 16 driving modes designed for a range of driving environments and surfaces.

The Bao 5 is priced at £69,500 with Elegance trim, and £78,880 with Ultimate. The first customer deliveries are due early next year.
