Athenea has appointed Hendy Group chief operating officer Duncan McPhee as its chief executive, effective November 16.
McPhee will lead the car dealer group as Brayleys Cars and Johnsons Cars continue their integration under the Athenea name.
His appointment coincides with Simon Bottomley’s return to Hendy as chief operating officer, a position Bottomley previously held between 2018 and 2022.
McPhee will work with Andrew Burn on a handover as Athenea develops its existing manufacturer partnerships and prepares to introduce new franchises.
Leading Brayleys and Johnsons integration
Athenea has launched a single operating platform intended to bring Brayleys and Johnsons together as one organisation.
McPhee’s responsibilities will include overseeing the next phase of integration, supporting growth and improving the customer experience across the group’s dealership network.
He brings more than two decades of automotive experience, including almost 16 years at Lookers. He held operational and franchise leadership positions before becoming its chief operating officer in 2021.
Amro Jayousi, speaking on behalf of Athenea’s board, said: “Over the past year, we have laid strong foundations for the future of the business. We have brought together two successful dealer groups, launched the Athenea brand and established a clear strategy for sustainable growth.
“Duncan’s track record of leading large-scale automotive retail operations, developing strong manufacturer partnerships and delivering operational excellence makes him the ideal person to lead the next chapter. We’re delighted to welcome him to Athenea and look forward to supporting a successful transition.”
McPhee said: “Athenea has already built significant momentum and has a compelling vision for the future. The combination of strong OEM partnerships, ambitious growth plans and a clear commitment to colleagues and customers creates an exciting platform for long-term success.
“I am looking forward to joining the team and working with colleagues across the Group as we continue to strengthen our existing brands, welcome new franchise partners and deliver a consistently outstanding experience for customers. There is tremendous opportunity ahead, and I am excited to help shape the next stage of Athenea’s journey.”
At Hendy, Bottomley will support a transformation programme focused on operational efficiency, profitability and manufacturer relationships.
