Cian O’Brien has been appointed managing director of JLR UK as part of a senior leadership reshuffle spanning the company’s home market, Defender brand and North American operation.

O’Brien will succeed Patrick McGillycuddy, who is stepping down from the UK role to become global managing director of Defender.

McGillycuddy replaces Mark Cameron, who has been appointed chief executive of North America in a newly created position.

JLR said the appointments would support its Growth, Reimagined ambitions, strengthen its focus on North America and maintain momentum across its Range Rover, Defender, Discovery and Jaguar brands in the UK.

O’Brien takes charge of JLR UK

O’Brien is currently market and business operations director for JLR UK, joining the car maker as vice president of global commercial operations in January 2026, based at the carmaker’s Whitley headquarters in Coventry.

Before joining JLR, he spent more than five years as managing director of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles UK, leading the brand’s British operation from July 2020 until September 2025.

His appointment at Volkswagen followed three years in the US as executive vice president and chief operating officer of Audi of America between May 2017 and July 2020.

O’Brien had previously led Audi UK as managing director, taking charge of the premium brand in September 2016.

Earlier in his career, O’Brien was managing director of Seat Ireland between November 2012 and August 2014.

He will take charge of the UK business as it prepares for further Range Rover Electric launches and the debut of Jaguar’s Type 01 later this year.

O’Brien said: “The UK remains a critically important market for JLR, and we have a tremendous opportunity ahead of us. With exciting new Range Rover products coming to market and the continued evolution of Jaguar, this is a defining moment for our business.

“Working closely with our teams and retail partners, I look forward to taking JLR UK from strength to strength and continuing to deliver exceptional experiences for our clients.”

McGillycuddy moves to Defender

McGillycuddy has led JLR UK since 2023, overseeing the company’s commercial performance and relationships with its franchised dealer network during a period of economic and industry disruption.

JLR said the UK business had strengthened performance across its House of Brands, developed its modern luxury customer experience and deepened collaboration with dealer partners during his tenure.

Patrick McGillycuddy said: “It has been a privilege to have held this role over the past three years and to lead a business, our Range Rover, Defender, Discovery and Jaguar brands and wider retail network that I care deeply about.

“Together, with our partners we have navigated significant headwinds and changing market conditions, and I am incredibly proud of the way our teams across the network have pulled together to deliver for our exceptional brands and clients.”

In his global Defender role, McGillycuddy will take responsibility for the continued development and commercial growth of the brand.

Cameron’s appointment as chief executive of North America reflects the strategic importance JLR places on the region as it seeks to accelerate growth in one of its largest international markets.
