India is set to be the world’s second-largest contributor to polyethylene capacity additions, according to a new report.

Polyethylene is a material commonly used in packaging, utility and water pipes, medical equipment and agriculture – making it high in demand as these sectors continue to grow.

The country already accounts for over 14% of the expected global capacity additions to polyethylene production by 2030.

A new report by GlobalData reveals that India is likely to witness polyethylene capacity additions from 13 upcoming projects by the end of the decade.

The highest polyethylene capacity addition in India is expected to come from a planned project in the Madhya Pradesh state, which is currently under construction.

Nivedita Roy, Oil and Gas Analyst at GlobalData, said: “India’s upcoming polyethylene projects highlight the country’s strategic push to strengthen its petrochemicals value chain and improve supply security for key industrial sectors.

“With multiple large-scale plants scheduled to come online by 2030, India is well positioned to narrow its import gap, support rising domestic consumption, and emerge as one of the most important growth markets in the global polyethylene industry.”

India’s manufacturing and industrial sectors are growing rapidly – its manufacturing sector grew by 5.5% year on year in May 2026, while overall industrial production increased by 5.1%.
