Where do end of life wind turbine blades go?

A facility will be established in Scotland to recycle wind turbine blades and industrial composite waste, following a memorandum of understanding between Port of Inverness and waste management company Plaswire.

Plaswire’s current facilities repurpose industrial materials into products that can replace wood, concrete and hard plastics – the idea is for wind turbines to meet the same circular fate.

Plaswire CEO Andrew Billingsley said: “As many wind farm operators begin replacing their original onshore turbines with newer, more efficient equipment, the question of what to do with old blades has become a major challenge.

“Offshore wind is also a huge opportunity for the North of Scotland, and we can help fill the gap in making the supply chain more sustainable by recycling the waste created in the production process.”

Plaswire was awarded funding to support the early-stage development of this project in 2024 through the first round of The Crown Estate’s £50m Supply Chain Accelerator.

The global wind turbine blade recycling market is said to be expanding from $64.96 billion in 2024 to $158.9 billion by 2030, with around 80-90% of wind turbines currently recyclable.
