The National Farmer’s Union (NFU) and the UK’s leading supermarkets are calling on the Chancellor to use the upcoming Budget to strengthen the nation’s food security.

In a joint letter, the group warned that current tax rules are preventing UK growers from making vital long-term business decisions, with inadequate support for investments in essential farm infrastructure.

They are hoping to incentivise investment in critical infrastructure such as renewable energy, to help boost productivity, resilience and sustainability.

Tom Bradshaw, NFU president, said: “British farmers and growers want to invest in the future. They want to increase productivity, improve efficiency, reduce environmental impacts and strengthen domestic food production. But too often the tax system works against these investments rather than supporting them.”

The UK’s food production-to-supply ratio fell to 60% in 2025, down from 65% the previous year, according to Defra figures. The decline highlights the importance of supporting domestic growers and strengthening the UK’s ability to produce its own food.
