Central London’s electricity network has been given a boost after over 14 kilometres of underground cables have been replaced.
The UK Power Networks (UKPN) project has now connected four strategic electrical sites across the city centre in a bid to keep London switched on.
Joshua Alderdice, UKPN Programme Manager, said: “Power supplies in London are 99.9% reliable, thanks to projects like this which modernise and maintain the equipment we all rely on.
“We understand how important energy resilience is in central London, and I’m proud to be part of a project where we improve this.”
UKPN say that the project will strengthen supplies while making smarter use of the infrastructure already available.
The £7.5 million investment saw new circuits connect the locations through a series of tunnels – replacing infrastructure before the end of its life to avoid reactive fixes, whilst making new connections. The locations that are now linked together will further bolster electricity supplies.
