A major clean fuels hub planned for Sullom Voe Terminal has received Scottish Government backing, supporting the development of low-carbon fuel production.
Veri Energy will receive almost £760,000 to fund the third phase of the project, which aims to begin producing hydrogen and e-methanol by 2030.
The facility is expected to expand production during the following decade, transforming one of Scotland’s most significant energy sites into a centre for sustainable fuel manufacturing.
The development will build on Shetland’s long-established energy expertise by retaining and retraining skilled oil and gas workers while creating new opportunities for local businesses.
It is also intended to supply e-methanol to a proposed sustainable aviation fuel plant at the former Grangemouth refinery, strengthening Scotland’s emerging clean fuels supply chain.
Hydrogen and e-methanol are expected to play an increasingly important role in reducing emissions from sectors that are difficult to electrify, including aviation, shipping and heavy industry.
Developing domestic production will also improve energy security and support regional economic growth.
