Reform UK have promised to cut £150 off energy bills by reforming the green levy system and moving costs onto the Treasury.
During the recent party conference, Deputy leader Richard Tice laid out plans which say the discount would be moved to being paid by the exchequer and take the policy cost off of consumer bills by repealing and removing other Net Zero costs.
Mr Tice said that gas and electricity bills are “loaded with a number of policy costs” including Renewables Obligations, Feed-in Tariffs, The Warm Homes Discount and The Green Gas Levy Together.
The Deputy Leader added: “Households have been squeezed year after year, despite the fact that the wholesale price of gas has fallen since 2022.
“Successive Conservative and Labour governments have layered cost upon cost onto consumer bills in the name of Net Zero, with little regard to the struggles of the British billpayer that bears them.”
However, the End Fuel Poverty Coalition say that the discount scheme needs to go further and worry the party’s plans suggest a possible axing of the entire programme.
A spokesperson for the group, said: “The plan being put forward will raise energy bills for the households who can least afford the rising cost of energy. Around six million low income families would lose their winter energy bills support if the plans go ahead.”
The Reform UK Party’s plans also include removing the tax on gas generators from the UK Emissions Trading Scheme and the Carbon Price Support.
