Drivers can now see petrol prices ahead of their visit to the forecourt as Google Maps have added a real-time update feature to the app.

Ongoing conflicts in the Middle East have caused fuel prices to soar, as the average price of diesel hit £2 per litre for the first time ever.

The government says that this update to the app is another way in which they are easing the pressure of the cost of living, as it is predicted to save people £40 a year and follows the VAT cut on electricity bills.

Minister for Energy Consumers, Polly Billington, said: “Tackling the affordability crisis is our first responsibility and for so many families and businesses, petrol and diesel are essential goods, not luxuries.

“Accessing the cheapest fuel should be simple, which is why it is a gamechanger for near real-time fuel prices to be shown on Google Maps for the first time in the UK, helping drivers to find the best deal and save money at the pump.”

The Fuel Finder scheme was created to help drivers get more competitive prices following a recommendation from the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA)

Since February, it has been compulsory for petrol stations across the UK to report the prices within 30 minutes of it changing or risk a fine.
