A new online tool could help schools, hospitals and community groups identify viable solar projects and access funding to deliver them.
UK Power Networks Distribution System Operator’s (DSO) Opportunity Finder is designed to help organisations assess potential solar schemes before applying for funding, potentially strengthening applications for non-domestic solar grants.
The tool will provide users with information including estimated installation costs, potential carbon savings and electricity network connection opportunities.
Lynne McDonald, Head of Local Net Zero at UK Power Networks DSO, said: “Opportunity Finder is about giving customers the clarity and confidence they need to move from ambition to action. We’ve listened to community groups, NHS trusts and partners who told us they face real challenges in identifying viable projects and securing funding.
“By bringing the right data together in one place, we’re making it easier for them to find opportunities, build strong business cases and unlock investment in local clean energy.”
The initiative comes as GB Energy makes £180 million available to support solar projects.
Opportunity Finder is currently being piloted by three NHS trusts, two community energy groups and the Greater South East Net Zero Hub.
UK Power Networks DSO say it will develop the tool during the pilot based on feedback from participating organisations, with plans to expand its functionality.
The initiative aims to make it easier for organisations to plan local clean energy projects and connect low-carbon technologies to the electricity network.
