Decommissioning company CNR has been fined £300,000 for breaching its vent consent of its Ninian fields in the North Sea.
The company self-reported on the 26th of November 2024 that it had exceeded the original consent agreement of 272.2 tonnes of CO2 between the 15th of June to the 31st of December 2024 by 20.9 tonnes.
Following a weather-related flare issue in October of the same year and a six-day production outage, CNR prepared an application to request an increase to its vent consent for the remainder of the year.
However, before the application was submitted, the consent was exceeded on the 26th of November 2024.
Jane de Lozey, Director of Regulation at the North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA), said: “It is deeply disappointing that CNR breached its consent again within a year of previously breaching its vent consent for the same area.
“Investors and the public rightly expect this industry is held to high standards and operators must comply with their regulatory responsibilities.”
CNR was previously fined £250,000 in 2023 for the same regulation breech in the same area.
The NSTA says it works closely with industry to support efforts in reducing emissions. Latest figures from the Emissions Monitoring Report show that total production emissions fell by about a third between 2018 and 2024.
