Energy-related complaints handled by the Energy Ombudsman rose 16% in the first half of 2026, with 46,532 cases accepted between January and June.
The figure increased from 40,068 during the same period last year. Billing disputes remained the most common complaint, accounting for 58% of cases accepted during the six-month period.
There were also a higher number of consumers being informed about their right to escalate unresolved complaints. Average supplier signposting rates rose from 48% in 2025 to 53% in the first half of 2026.
The increase in complaints comes amid ongoing pressure on household finances and a hike in the amount of supplier switches made.
In June, DESNZ announced plans to make it easier for consumers to access the Ombudsman.
The proposed changes include reducing the escalation period from eight weeks to six and introducing compensation where agreed remedies are not delivered on time.
