A major new survey says 53% of the UK public want to see more nuclear power stations built and prefer the energy source to any others.
The poll, conducted by YouGov, casts into doubt the decision to close all UK nuclear power stations by 2030, excluding Sizewell B, which is set to close in 2055.
Tom Greatrex, Chief Executive of the Nuclear Industry Association, said: “The British public understands nuclear power delivers reliable electricity, highly skilled and well-paid jobs and the clear investment it creates for communities across the country.
“As older stations retire, replacing them with new nuclear is essential to maintaining and improving our energy security, protecting households from the impact volatile gas markets have on the price of electricity, and ensuring the country has the reliable clean power needed to support economic growth.”
The public have trust in nuclear as an energy source, with 36% believing it will generate new jobs, in comparison just 14% chose solar and offshore wind as their top pick for powering their homes.
There was even less support for gas at just 12%.
Whilst 22% of the public still oppose the building of new nuclear power stations, the poll suggests overall big support for the UK’s nuclear industry.
