Motorpoint has submitted plans for a used car dealership in Chester that would create 46 jobs and bring a former commercial property on Sealand Road back into use.

The proposed dealership would include a showroom, workshop and dedicated valet building, according to a report by CheshireLive.

The application covers a 15,794 sq m plot previously occupied by Ungerer & The Quality Factor. Three of its original six building blocks have recently been demolished, with the remaining buildings earmarked for refurbishment.

Chester plans reuse existing buildings

The proposals focus on adapting the remaining buildings, with limited additional work to bring the vacant premises up to modern standards.

CheshireLive reports that the application sets out plans for improved vehicle circulation and separate customer and service areas.

The planning statement also argues that the development would bring an underused brownfield property back into productive use, support local investment and complement existing automotive and retail businesses along Sealand Road.

Dealership supporting new jobs

The proposed operation would employ 46 people across seven days, with 22 staff parking spaces included in the plans.

Showroom opening hours would be 10am to 8pm Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm on Saturdays and 11am to 5pm on Sundays.

The Chester proposal would extend Motorpoint’s geographical coverage if approved. The car supermarket group already has 22 dealerships, including Motorpoint Manchester and Motorpoint Widnes, less than an hour’s drive from Chester.

Motorpoint has continued to invest in its physical estate during 2026 as it looks to extend its geographic reach and support further volume growth.

Network strategy and investment

The group opened its 22nd store in Leeds earlier this year in July following a £15m investment in a new site on Whitehall Road, close to Elland Road.

The development gives Motorpoint a second significant presence in West Yorkshire alongside Castleford and increases its ability to serve customers across that region, with almost 300 vehicles stocked at the Leeds location.

The business is also pursuing further expansion in Scotland, where it has submitted plans for a new used car supermarket and workshop facility at Phoenix Business Park in Paisley which would strengthen Motorpoint’s coverage west of Glasgow and complement its existing operations in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

The network investment comes against a backdrop of improving financial performance. Motorpoint reported an 83% increase in pre-tax profit to £7.5 million for 2025/26, while retail volumes reached a record 64,600 vehicles.

The business has linked that progress to stronger sourcing, improved margins, increasing use of technology and continued gains in market share.
