UK manufacturers are under pressure to cut emissions whilst keeping energy prices under control – a seemingly impossible feat. In heavy industry, processes often require heat over 100 C, which traditionally involved gas as a main option.
A new heat pump range has introduced the idea of using heat pumps in place of electric boilers, providing temperatures of up to 122 C, while being up to three times as energy efficient.
The system, developed by Johnson Controls, can also combine with waste heat from other processes. Industrial sites could leverage this to use heat that would otherwise be wasted, further lowering emissions.
This technology is particularly beneficial for food and drink, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and advanced manufacturing, where high-temperature processes are important.
Ultimately, using new processes such as this could allow the UK industry to reduce fossil fuel use while remaining competitive. Technologies like this that can electrify processes previously dependent on gas could also become increasingly important.
