UK manufacturers could save a combined £2.1 billion by 2035 by switching away from gas and improving energy technologies.
A report by E.ON says that clean energy can create lower costs, resilience and growth if businesses invest in it.
Development Economics, an independent economic impact specialist, modelled energy audits, smart monitoring and management systems, on-site renewable generation and waste heat recovery interventions.
Under the highest adoption scenario, manufacturers could cut annual gas consumption by 15.2 terawatt-hours (TWh) and electricity use by 8.8TWh by 2035. This gas use is equal to more than 1.2 million average UK homes and electricity needs of 3.3 million.
E.ON’s polling of more than 500 UK businesses shows 89% expect to invest in energy efficiency or low-carbon technologies within two years. But 48% say that upfront costs are the biggest barrier.
Before making the switch, businesses say they want a faster grid access, more local infrastructure and rewards for energy storage and participation in flex markets.
