Construction of a large-scale UK battery energy storage system, situated alongside the onshore converter station for Hornsea 3 has been completed.
There are now 170 megapacks in place – each the length of a classic Routemaster London bus.
Constructed by Ørsted, the system will have a capacity of 600 MWh, equivalent to the daily power consumption of 80,000 UK homes.
Beatrice d’Eufemia, Project Manager for Iceni BESS at Ørsted said: “It’s a milestone moment for Ørsted that construction is now complete on our first large-scale battery energy storage system in the UK.
“The system will make the best use of renewable energy produced in the UK as when electricity generation exceeds demand, the excess can be stored and then used when demand is greater, helping balance the grid, and lower electricity costs for everyone.”
When completed, the battery energy storage system will be one of the largest in Europe.
