Boomtown is lowering emissions for its 17th edition of the festival with the Hydro XL main stage being powered by green hydrogen generators this week.
The event, which runs from 12th to the 16th of August at Matterley Estate in the South Downs National Park, is using units supplied by GeoPura for the sound and lighting systems.
Andrew Cunningham, CEO of GeoPura, said: “Using green hydrogen to power a 20,000-capacity main stage proves there’s a viable alternative to diesel today. The deployment of the Hydro XL follows Boomtown’s pilot hydrogen-powered stage last year and is more than twice the size.
The units use hydrogen produced through electrolysis using renewable electricity. The hydrogen is transported to the festival site, where fuel cells convert it into electricity.
The generators are designed to provide an alternative to diesel for off-grid and temporary power applications, which can be deployed at megawatt scale.
Acts including Skrillex, Groove Armada, Floating Points and Four Tet are headlining the Hydro XL during Boomtown Chapter 5: Radical Redesign.
