Research by ScottishPower has revealed enquiries for electric vehicle (EV) charging offers have increased by around 630% year-on-year as motorists look for ways to cut motoring costs amid rising fuel prices.

Latest figures from the RAC put diesel prices at 199.33p per litre and petrol at 174.23p per litre. A typical 55-litre petrol tank now costs around £96 to fill.

By comparison, charging an EV for the equivalent distance can cost around £10, compared with approximately £96 for a full tank of petrol. Electricity costs around 2p per mile, compared with 18p per mile for petrol, according to the figures.

The number of customers using dedicated EV charging solutions has also risen by 430% over the past year, while uptake of EV-specific tariffs has increased by more than 10%.

The figures suggest higher conventional fuel costs are encouraging more drivers to consider electric vehicles and home charging as a way to reduce running costs.
