Ben has launched its annual summer support programme for automotive workers and their families as demand for financial assistance continues to grow amid ongoing cost of living pressures.
The charity said more than 14,000 enquiries were made to its helpline over the past year, with money worries remaining one of the main reasons people sought support.
Demand for financial support grows
Now in its fourth year, Ben’s summer families project offers practical, emotional and financial support to current and former automotive workers facing higher costs during the school holidays.
The programme helps families with expenses including food, household bills, school uniforms and activities during the summer break.
Ben awarded more than 600 financial grants over the past year. Since launching in 2023, the summer families project has supported 80 adults and 111 children with more than £22,000 in financial assistance.
Funding for the programme has increased from £1,700 in its first year to almost £15,000 last year, reflecting growing demand for support.
Ben said rising living costs continue to affect the wellbeing of many automotive workers and their families, with financial pressures contributing to anxiety, low mood and relationship strain.
The BMTA Trust has contributed £3,000 towards this year’s summer support project.
Support available throughout the holidays
Julie Hayes, specialist services lead at Ben, said: “Times are tough for many automotive people right now. While the summer holidays are a chance for families to spend time together, they also bring extra costs for food, childcare, travel and preparing children for the new school year.
“We know money worries remain one of the biggest challenges facing people in the automotive industry. Whether someone needs financial help, support managing their finances or simply someone to talk to, we’re encouraging people to get in touch as early as possible.”
Katie Williams, development and grants manager at the BMTA, said: “The summer holidays can bring additional financial pressure for many families. We’re pleased to support Ben’s summer families project and help make a difference to people across the automotive community.”
Ben’s helpline and support services are available to anyone currently working, or who has previously worked, in the automotive industry, as well as their dependent family members.
The charity is also encouraging businesses and individuals to donate to the initiative. It said a £10 donation could pay for a school uniform item, £25 could fund a PE kit and £30 could provide a picnic for a family of four.
