The Baseload Market Reference Price (BMRP) for the coming winter has risen by 35% in a three-year high, according to the Low Carbon Contracts Company.
It has jumped from £84.7/MWh in Winter 2025 to £114.50 for Winter 2026, as the UK faces exposure to volatile international gas markets, which could have a significant effect on wholesale electricity prices.
Tom Greatrex, Chief Executive of the Nuclear Industry Association, said: “The sharp rise in the Baseload Market Reference Price is another reminder of why we need our existing nuclear plants to run as long as possible and why we need to reform our nuclear regulations to deliver new nuclear cheaper and faster.
“Only new nuclear, providing clean, 24/7 sovereign energy, can get us out of our dependence on the volatile international gas markets for good.”
Low Carbon Contracts Company (LCCC) uses the BMRP as a seasonal benchmark to calculate Contract for Difference (CfD) payments for baseload low-carbon generators.
