ESNZ Committee has expressed large concern over the UK’s lack of progress on action against climate change – so they’ve set an ultimatum.
The report from ESNZ recommends that by 2027, the government should publish a UK national roadmap for a just phase-out of fossil fuels.
Alongside this, they ask for a traffic light system, to help to rate how climate policies address climate risk, a plan and legislation to deliver on lagging performance and a focus on delivery with like-minded countries that cuts across trade, finance and international development.
The MPs say Government failures to act on the Climate Change Committee’s (CCC) recommendations and to deliver on domestic adaptation are challenging the UK’s credibility on the world stage – ahead of COP31, this is not desirable.
The series of recommended steps mostly come alongside deadlines, aiming to push the government into action after a lagging performance and empty promises.
