Chancellor John Healey has said the government remains “unshakably committed” to the UK’s 2030 clean power target in today’s Autumn Budget speech.

However, he emphasised that those goals will require a “deep reform” of the energy system and set out new methods.

From now on, Labour say it will only buy and build new clean power projects when they lower bills and can connect to the grid. The Chancellor says the improvements to grid connections will be built through the government’s new GB Grid venture.

He claimed this will “reform the complex web of institutions that govern the system”.

Hand-in-hand with the clean power target, the budget also focuses on improvements to EV infrastructure. Drivers of electric vehicles are set to receive reduced costs after Labour vow to cut prices at lower-powered public chargers.

Whilst he doubled down on Labour’s commitment to the clean power goal, he commended Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh on her approval of the Jackdaw gas field, hailing it a “pragmatic common sense decision”.
