Grainger Motor Group has secured Motorpoint’s former Ipswich car supermarket to expand its neighbouring MG dealership and increase its used car stock capacity.

The West End Road premises sit next to Grainger’s existing EMG MG Ipswich dealership, allowing the dealer group to combine the two locations into a larger motor retail operation.

Motorpoint closed its Ipswich dealership following its final day of trading on October 18.

Grainger said the acquisition would give customers access to a broader choice of used vehicles and support the continued growth of its business in the Ipswich market. The financial terms of the transaction have not been disclosed.

Grainger Motor Group now operates 24 dealerships, including the BYD, Chery, Honda, Kia, Mazda, MG, Nissan, Omoda and Jaecoo brands, and employs around 640 staff.

Used car capacity set to grow

The enlarged dealership will be managed by the existing MG Ipswich team, maintaining continuity of management and customer service as the operation expands.

Grainger Motor Group founders Harry and Neal Grainger said: “Securing the neighbouring site is a strategic move for us in Ipswich. It allows us to consolidate our footprint alongside our existing MG dealership and create more space to grow our used-car operation.

“We already have an established team and a strong presence in the area, so bringing the site into our existing operation is a natural next step. It gives us greater capacity to expand our used-car offering and continue serving customers across Ipswich and the surrounding area.”

Grainger builds dealer network

Brothers Harry and Neal Grainger founded Grainger Motor Group in 2022 and have grown the business through dealership acquisitions and investment.

The group’s network incorporates established motor retail businesses including EMG Motor Group and Mantles, with dealerships across East Anglia, Hertfordshire and London.

Grainger represents 10 automotive brands across its network: Kia, Omoda, Jaecoo, Chery, BYD, Nissan, Mazda, Honda Cars, Honda Motorcycles and MG.

The former Motorpoint premises will give the group additional capacity in a market where it already has an established dealership, rather than requiring it to develop a new operation from the ground up.

Grainger said the transaction forms part of its strategy of investing in locations where it can build on existing operations, increase vehicle capacity and provide customers with greater choice.

Earlier this month, Grainger Motor Group acquired Chiswick Honda in West London, a business established by their father David Grainger when he headed Norton Way Group.
