Diesel is now selling at its highest price ever recorded as forecourts are charging 199.18p per litre on average across the UK.
It’s now almost double the record low seen at pumps in February 2016 which was, on average, 100.19p per litre.
Speaking to Sky News, Simon Williams head of policy at RAC, said: “These extraordinarily high prices are another reminder of just how exposed the UK is to events occurring far away from its shores.
“Only a sustained lower oil price – over several weeks, not days – will lead to cheaper prices at the pumps.”
Fuel prices have been contributing to rising inflation since March as petrol and diesel costs were the first to react to the surge in oil prices at the start of the US-Iran war.
