NESO’s new technology could save consumers £9 billion in a vital step towards a renewable-led energy system.

The synchronous condenser, which is a large rotating machine, will provide clean shock absorbers to help keep the electricity system stable during sudden changes in supply or demand.

Built by RWE, the machine is set to start spinning this week at the existing power station in Pembroke.

Nikolaus Valerius, Chief Executive Officer of RWE Generation SE, said: “As more renewable generation connects to the grid, technologies like this will play an increasingly important role in maintaining a secure and reliable electricity network, supporting the Government’s ambition to deliver a clean power system while strengthening resilience.”

This is the fourth synchronous condenser to go live in Wales and the first at the Pembroke Net Zero Centre.

This project is the first of sixteen stability technologies under NESO’s Stability Pathfinder programme. It is designed to cut emissions, strengthen energy security and save consumers billions in system costs.

Matt Magill, Director of Engineering at NESO, said: “NESO has pioneered new markets for technologies such as synchronous condensers and Britain’s first grid-forming batteries.

“Together, they are helping replace services traditionally provided by fossil fuel power stations, while maintaining one of the world’s most secure and reliable electricity systems.”

The programme currently provides 17.2 GVA.s of inertia (shock absorber) to Britain’s electricity network and the next phase could add a further 26.9 GVA.s to ensure electricity continues to flow safely and reliably to homes and businesses across the country.
