As wildfires rage across France and Spain a new tie up is hoping to offer better resilience with the growing threat from the flames to carbon capture projects.
The University of East Anglia (UEA) and Carbon ratings agency BeZero Carbon, have teamed up to improve understanding of wildfire risks facing forest carbon projects. They hope this will support more effective climate action and long-term carbon removal.
The collaboration will support the State of Wildfires Project, an international scientific initiative involving more than 50 institutions across six continents.
As the project’s exclusive carbon markets partner, BeZero will provide funding and specialist analysis, to assess how increasing wildfire risk could affect forest carbon projects.
The partnership comes as climate change and the developing El Niño event are expected to increase the likelihood of extreme heat, drought and wildfires in many regions, threatening natural carbon stores that play a vital role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Using advanced geospatial tools to analyse wildfire exposure across forest carbon projects, it is hoped this will back up scientific findings, reach policymakers and help businesses and investors.
The research aims to improve confidence in carbon markets by providing greater transparency around the permanence of carbon credits.
The findings are expected to help strengthen the resilience of forest carbon projects and support sustainable climate mitigation worldwide.
