Renewable energy continued its rapid expansion across the United States during the first five months of 2026, with new figures showing clean electricity generation rose by more than 10 per cent while fossil fuel capacity continued to decline.
Data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), reviewed by the SUN DAY Campaign, shows renewable sources accounted for 30.3% of total electricity generation between January and May, up from 28.2 % during the same period in 2025.
Combined wind and solar generation supplied more than 22% of US electricity and produced 57% more power than coal during the period, underlining the country’s accelerating transition towards lower-carbon energy.
The report also highlights continued investment in clean energy infrastructure. Renewable generating capacity increased by almost 45GW over the past year, while battery energy storage expanded by more than 16GW.
Looking ahead, the EIA projects that solar, wind and battery storage could add around 83GW of new capacity by spring 2027, while fossil fuel and nuclear capacity is expected to decline overall.
Ken Bossong, Executive Director of the SUN DAY Campaign, said: “Notwithstanding all the roadblocks erected by the Trump Administration, the growth of solar, wind, and battery storage is actually accelerating, proving once again that one cannot stop an idea whose time has come.”
