The Climate Action Tracker has published its analysis of Canada and US climate action – finding that as both government’s have rolled back climate policies, their statuses have dropped to critically insufficient climate action (US) and highly insufficient (Canada).

With large focus placed on US policy changes for renewables and fossil fuels, Canada is slipping under the radar whilst it continues to decline in climate action, having been downgraded in its sub-rating for Policies & action to “Critically insufficient”.

Finn Hossfeld, CAT US country lead of the NewClimate Institute (CAT partner organisation) said: “The Trump Administration continues to escalate the most aggressive, comprehensive, and consequential rollback of climate mitigation targets, policies, and funding that the Climate Action Tracker has ever analysed”

Whilst attention has been focused on Trump, Canada’s prime minister Mark Carney has removed the consumer carbon price, cancelled the planned cap on oil and gas emissions, terminated the ‘Two billion trees’ programme early and much more.

Bill Hare, CEO of Climate Analytics (a CAT partner) said “What is shocking to us is the true extent to which Prime Minister Carney has rolled back climate policies, largely in favour of the fossil fuel industry”

Canada and the US may continue to fall in climate action ranks if no action is taken to reverse policy changes or implement new laws to promote sustainability.
