Sodium-ion, an up and coming alternative to lithium-ion (commonly used in EVs and BESS), is expected to expand into Europe over the next five years.

Following an agreement between a major manufacturer and its German counterpart, 3 GWh of sodium-ion energy storage systems will be installed in Europe by 2031.

Under the latest agreement, these battery systems for grid-scale, commercial, and industrial applications would expand into the German, Swiss, and Austrian markets.

The manufacturer in the agreement, CATL, deployed more than 30 energy storage projects in Germany between 2022 and 2026, including lithium-ion batteries.

Unlike lithium-ion batteries, sodium-ion systems hold the ability to work in extreme temperatures – which makes them a potential fit for renewable energy storage, as the sodium-ion market grows.
