SmartestEnergy has acquired an 85% stake in Spanish energy supplier Factor Energia S.A. for €204 million (£177m), marking a major step in its international expansion.
The deal strengthens SmartestEnergy’s presence in Iberia and Latin America, combining its global trading expertise with Factorenergia’s retail capabilities.
Founder and CEO Emilio Rousaud will retain a 15% stake, remain in his role and join the group’s executive committee.
Headquartered in Barcelona, Factorenergia serves more than 300,000 household and business customers across Spain, Portugal, México, Chile and Brazil. The company offers electricity and gas alongside services such as solar, battery storage and EV charging.
Robert Groves, Group CEO of SmartestEnergy, said: “The acquisition of Factorenergia is an important milestone for SmartestEnergy as we expand our global footprint. Factorenergia is a market leader in the Iberian region, recognised for its customer-focused approach, innovation and market expertise.”
Emilio Rousaud added: “This transaction marks a new chapter of growth and international ambition for Factorenergia.”
The acquisition is expected to create a platform for growth across new markets and customer segments, while maintaining Factorenergia’s existing brand and operations.
