Russia’s continued attacks on Ukraine have turned back to critical infrastructure, in its largest attack on Ukrainian energy infrastructure since springtime.

The Russian defence ministry said one of its targets was the Trypilska power station, according to the BBC. Kyiv’s three largest electricity supply power stations have all been attacked between 2022 and this year.

Ukraine’s energy ministry reported that on Wednesday, some households remained without power – prompting a state-owned grid operator to urge residents not to use powerful electrical appliances between the hours of 10:00 and 16:00 local time due to the low power supply.

Russia’s defence ministry said it had launched massive overnight strikes on Ukrainian facilities, saying targets included the Trypilska thermal power plant. They claim it supplied electricity to Ukrainian defence facilities.

The latest strikes underline the pressure facing Ukraine’s energy system as winter approaches. With key generation and transmission infrastructure repeatedly targeted, damage to facilities around Kyiv risks further reducing the country’s available power supply and increasing the need for emergency restrictions. Ukrainian authorities are now working to restore damaged infrastructure.
