According to new data from the government, August has seen the highest ever number of heat pump vouchers paid under the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS), as well as a 40% increase on BUS vouchers paid in the same period in 2025.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme provides upfront grants to property owners in England and Wales to help cover the cost of installing low-carbon heating systems.
The scheme is administered by Ofgem and currently offers £7,500 towards eligible air-to-water and ground source heat pumps, with additional support of up to £9,000 available for eligible off-gas-grid properties replacing oil or LPG heating.
Jess Ralston, Head of Energy at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) said: “August’s record month for heat pumps under the Boiler Upgrade Scheme is another signal that this net zero technology is moving into the mainstream, with people seeing the clean transition as a route to energy independence and more stable bills.
“If the UK had fewer Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and gas boilers, we’d be far less exposed to the international oil and gas price spikes that have repeatedly driven up bills and triggered energy crises.”
The latest figures show 3,238 air-to-water heat pump vouchers were paid in August, up from 2,307 in the same month last year. The total also narrowly surpassed the previous monthly record of 3,214, set in October 2025.
