The Port of Blyth has launched a major expansion plan worth up to £100m aimed at turning the North East site into an even bigger hub for offshore wind and clean energy projects.

The Battleship Wharf Expansion will increase port capacity through new quay space reclaimed land deeper berths and upgraded handling infrastructure capable of supporting larger vessels and next generation offshore components.

Early development work is being jointly backed by the Port of Blyth Northumberland County Council and the North East Combined Authority alongside £275,000 from The Crown Estate’s Supply Chain Accelerator fund.

The project includes around three hectares of reclaimed land up to 260 metres of quay extensions and a deepwater berth linked to the nearby JDR cable factory to streamline offshore operations.

Port leaders say the investment will help attract manufacturers strengthen the UK clean energy supply chain and create hundreds of jobs across the region.

The timing is significant following confirmation from The Crown Estate of new offshore wind seabed leasing opportunities off the North East coast.

Martin Lawlor OBE Chief Executive of the Port of Blyth said: “The Battleship Wharf Expansion will ensure we have the infrastructure capacity and capability to support the next generation of offshore wind and clean energy projects.”

Regional leaders said the development reinforces the North East’s ambition to become a centre for green energy manufacturing and offshore wind deployment as Britain ramps up investment in Clean Power 2030.
