Plaid Cymru call for more fuel support for rural Wales

Plaid Cymru MPs have written to the Chancellor, calling for urgent fuel price support for rural communities across Wales.

The message follows the price of diesel hitting a record £2 per litre, as the politicians argue that people who live in the countryside are being disproportionally affected due to a lack of options.

This lack of options comes in many forms for rural communities, as people have less choice between petrol stations and may not have alternative transport options to avoid driving.

The Plaid Cymru MPs said: “Rural households across Wales often have no alternative mode of transport to travel to work, access education or attend essential healthcare appointments, and are therefore paying a premium simply because of where they live.”

Prices have soared since ongoing conflicts in the Middle East continue to intensify, putting pressure on supply.

Businesses have also warned of the impact. Wales-based food distributor Harlech Foodservice, says its fuel costs have increased by 50% since March and are projected to reach £1.5 million a year.

Despite this, Wales remains entirely excluded from the Rural Fuel Duty Relief Scheme, which currently applies to remote areas in England and Scotland.

Plaid Cymru is calling for the government to retain the temporary 5p cut in Fuel Duty beyond December, extend the Rural Fuel Duty Scheme to communities in Wales and consider increasing the relief to reflect continuing high prices.
