A sustainable solutions provider is calling on data centre operators to commit to measuring and reporting water use efficiency metrics openly, following findings that the public may be misinformed about data centre infrastructure.
The company, Carrier, has drawn attention to intensified scrutiny on how these facilities consume energy and water.
They say that while resource management is essential to industrial planning, sweeping pauses could affect investment decisions and the UK’s ability to develop domestic digital infrastructure.
Findings from techUK and the environment agency survey showed that 51% of their surveyed data centres used waterless cooling systems – which challenges the huge misconception that all data centres guzzle water.
Oliver Sanders, Commercial Director of Data Centres at Carrier, said: “With computing demands rising, public education is essential to correct conflicting figures and online misinformation.
“The situation with water use is not as cut and dry as it appears. By committing to open transparency and measuring our environmental impact, our industry can replace speculation with verifiable facts.”
