A new energy centre will supply around 750 affordable homes with low-carbon heat extracted from naturally warm mine water at a treatment facility in Durham.

The process delivers clean and secure heat to Seaham Garden Village by making use of mine water already being pumped to the surface.

The programme recently went live and has now completed the commissioning phase, meaning the network is fully operational.

This scheme brings environmental benefits as it is estimated to save 2,600 tonnes of CO2 annually, which is almost 65,000 tonnes of carbon emissions avoided over 25 years.

Mine water is naturally heated by geothermal processes deep underground and maintains a stable temperature all year round.

The scheme supports the government’s Plan for Change mission to ensure the UK works towards at least 95% clean power generation by 2030.
