The Grid Users Coalition (GUC) has warned that the budget’s grid fixes have left most businesses stuck in the queue.

To resolve the issue, twelve organisations who make up the GUC have called on Ofgem to make networks publish the entire connections queue, from formal application onward and down to 1MVA.

The call is in response to Ofgems transforming comnections data consultation, which closes on 6th November.

Pete Clutton-Brock, Chair of the Grid Users Coalition, said: “The Budget gets the diagnosis right: slow grid connections are holding businesses back. But its fixes are not sufficient to meet the challenge, which is economy-wide.

“Government shouldn’t have to search for grid capacity on businesses’ behalf. Publish the data, set common standards, and every business can find the connection it needs. Most of that costs the taxpayer nothing.”

Various reports have confirmed that 82.8% of logistics businesses do not have the grid capacity to cover their future needs and one in three industrial businesses say grid connection problems are delaying new projects.

Freeing up stuck grid connections and boosting the grid is a start – but the GUC are asking for more.

They say progress is too slow and critical gaps remain, calling for action in costs, visibility, faster timelines, a better policy approach and consistent service.
