Ofgem has held the first meeting of a cross sector body looking to tackle grid connection queues.

The Connections Investor Delivery Engagement Forum is a platform for NESO, investors, developers and network companies, to improve their communication with Government and carry out NESO’s Connections Reform programme.

The connections queue still remains as a significant issue as it has grown to more than 770 GW, despite previous promises from Keir Starmer’s government, to cut red tape and speed up infrastructure delivery.

NESO’s Connections Reform programme is an overhaul of the UK’s electricity connections process. It is designed to prioritise projects, reduce speculative applications, and accelerate the delivery of clean power.

Despite the delays, Ofgem says 750 offers have been issued to projects in the queue. It says it’s important to recognise the progress that has been achieved so far, through the collective efforts of industry, NESO, network companies and developers.

The growth in data centres present challenges for the organisations, as the resources that use up network capacity without making progress, prevent viable projects from securing the connections they need.

Ofgem said the first meeting of the group provided strong and constructive feedback to improve the issue.
