Millions of people living in flats and social housing could gain access to generating, storing and sharing their own energy under a new UK-first solution announced this week.
E.ON Next and Allume have collaborated to help those in flats and social housing access the benefits of self-sufficient energy, as more than 5 million households are currently ‘locked out’ of the benefits of generating and storing their own power because they live in flats or social housing.
This is due to traditional systems not being able to fairly share power between homes.
Research shows that 80% of Brits want solar panels and batteries, yet 22% say the technology isn’t suitable for their kind of home.
The system combines shared solar and communal batteries alongside grid flexibility, to make the benefits of new energy available to people who have previously been excluded from rooftop solar, battery storage and flexibility payments.
The system has already been shown to reduce electricity bills by 30-60%, while participating residents could also receive up to £160 a year through battery flexibility payments.
